Earnest Door Appreciation Society — a catalog of literal back doors
Door of the day
The Levittown Aluminum
Storm door · 1953 · Levittown, New York (postwar tract housing)
The Levittown Aluminum is the door the Society had to include even though it is not, by traditional metrics, a good door. It is a first-generation 1953 aluminum storm door, mass-produced for the Levittown tract — the suburb that invented the American suburb. The frame is thin. The hardware is stamped. The glass is just glass. It is not a craft object. But it is the door that landed on three million houses between 1953 and 1965, and the Society's mission is to appreciate doors as they are, not only as we wish them to be.

The Earnest Door Appreciation Society catalogs, restores, and writes about literal back doors — the kind you walk through every day. Architectural back doors, screen doors, French doors, sliding doors, Dutch doors, pocket doors, barn doors. We do not have opinions about other meanings of the phrase. We have opinions about hinges, mesh, weatherstripping, and the proper way to square a rough opening.
The Collection currently includes 18 doors. The Practical Guides currently number 5, with more on the way.
